Houston: High Fashion Home

Today, after a hard day of PPR test prep, I went to check out High Fashion Home with my friend/co-worker Adrian. High Fashion Home is like, according to Adrian, IKEA-meets- Urban Outfitters. I’m inclined to agree with her. Their fabric store across the street is like a JoAnn’s craft store. As someone who loves interior design, I loved the way they decorated living rooms, couches, and beds with bright fabrics and bold prints. Adrian was having a hard time not drooling too.

I felt like a kid in a toy store. There was so much to see!

I saw cute little armchairs, delectable low beds, and I finally saw the stupendous floating bookshelves I’ve been seeing all over Pinterest. The best part was that everything was all out in the open and you could sit on the furniture to see if you liked it:

We saw some chairs with a lot of character!
We got to try several couches…not all were a good fit.

It was a great trip. We didn’t buy anything but we sure were inspired to upgrade our living spaces.

Highlight of the trip:

Adrian finally providing me with proof that chartreuse is a real color and not a bougie invention of her imagination. Please forgive my ignorance!

Good Eats: Grand Lux Cafe

My sister, Ney, and I went to The Grande Lux Cafe for the first time with our Aunty MR.

After observing my Aunt interact with the waitstaff and order her food, I decided I want to be slightly bougie when I grow up. She ordered a delicious NOV pomegranate tea. I tried it and asked for a tea bag of it to-go. You see, bougie girls drink tea. That’s where I’m headed.

My overall impression of Grand Lux was good. The meal was around $15 (a little pricey) but the portions were BIG. I couldn’t finish my food at the restaurant; I didn’t even finish it when I took it to lunch. I finally demolished that bad boy for dinner! I had the apple pie a la mode for dessert, which left much to be desire. I liked the apple filling and the Bluebell ice cream. The pie crust was a little sour.

Grand Lux, for the good food, atmosphere, and great waitstaff gets my stamp of approval!

It’s the little things…

It’s the little things that make me happy:

1. My thumb ring

   – It was a gift from a friend. Originally a mood ring, but I wore it in the shower one too many times.

2. My red yarn braid

   – I randomly decided to put it in one day. It reminds me that I’m 22, not 35 like I tell my students. I can hide it in the back or pull it to the front.

3. My waist beads

   – They were made by my friend, Naomi (Check out her etsy shop). It’s very sensual to know that I have these beautiful beads under my clothes. They also help me keep track of my weight.

4. My ear cuff

   – I had been shopping on etsy for a decently priced ear cuff. I finally found one at Icing at the mall for $4!  It’s a great alternative to a piercing.

My latest food obsession: Craisins!

Last year, I had a thing for string cheese and now I’ve moved on to Craisins. The strange things is that I find raisins absolutely disgusting, but I like craisins. They’re delicious!

“I like your style, Ms. K”

A student said this to me today, only after she had stared at me long and hard for a few minutes. I think she was trying to decide if she really liked it or if she was just being courteous.

When I first became a teacher, I decided I wanted to be the Ms. Frizzle of education. I even bought my very own Ms. Frizzle dress. It’s flowery print and has a big skirt. I bought it because it has deep teacher-friendly pockets.

Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t go out and frizzle-rize my wardrobe; I simply added more school-appropriate piece. I still wear most of my college wardrobe. The only difference between then and now is that I paired up my college clothes with some for crisp and professional pieces. I went and bought some button-down shirts, some slacks, some cardigans, and comfortable heels, but for the most part, my wardrobe remained the same.

I may be a teacher, but that doesn’t mean I have to look like one. Yes, I want to be professional but I don’t want to compromise my style. I still wear red lipstick like I love to do. At first I was afraid I would scare the kids. I was right, at first they were shocked at my bright lip color, but then they got used to it. They got used to my colorful dresses, my skinny belts on top of cardigans, and my ever-changing hairstyle changes.

Some days I have big hits and other days the kids whisper in the hallway that my hair makes me look like King Tut, the young Egyptian pharaoh. That’s ok. They’re just jealous that they have to stay in the same old dusty uniform all year and I get to change my look every day :D. But on the cool, there was a time last year that I considered adopting a signature uniform like Janelle Monae had done.

But then I’d have to give up some versatility…I don’t think I’m ready for that yet.
