Welcome to TFA 2012 Induction

I volunteered at Houston’s Teach for America 2012 Induction last week. I had a fabulous time! I met some great individuals who are about to undergo intensive training to be transformed into transformational teachers. Being among such high energy, optimistic people recharged my passion for education.

Here are just a few of the incoming TFA Corps Members.

I’m proud that I will be working along-side these individuals in the fight for educational equity.

Good luck at Institute!

These are some of the outfits that I wore that week:

I had my hair in coils all week. At this point, the coils are about a month old. I started experimenting with updos and finally settled on the basket weave technique or the the “lobster tail” that many loc’d individuals sport. All you do is layer strands of hair on top of one another in chunks. I used to do this style with my yarn braids for updos.

People kept telling me they loved my locs, which was very flattering. It seems I have an eye for loc-look-alikes when it comes to hair. Later on in the summer, I may try another loc-look-alike style when I go to New York.

This is what the back of my head looked like:

I know. Ridiculous! Lol.

Looking for NATURAL HAIR Info?

(frolab.com)

By now, you all know I love fashion, good food, and adventures. You should also know that I love natural hair! I have been natural for almost three years and I’ve loved every minute of it. Maybe it’s because it’s been a while since my Big Chop, but I don’t talk about my hair as much anymore. My hair used to be all I talked about!

I don’t want you all to miss out on all the lessons that I learned while I was transitioning and first growing out my hair, so I am going to dig deep into the recesses of the blogosphere and find some of my older stuff to share with you, if you are interested in natural hair.

In the drop-down menus, you should see a “Natural Hair” tab that should tell you just about anything you want to know about natural hair from transitioning styles to hair maintenance. You can also find popular natural bloggers and vloggers under the “Afroinspiration” tab.

The NATUAL HAIR section will be updated periodically.

Thanks,

The MANAGEMENT ;)

Lauryn Hill Doppleganger

Lauryn Hill comments

I’m not sure why but people keep telling me I remind them of Lauryn Hill. At first, I thought it was just my crazy friends trying to be funny. I still don’t see it. I got Lauryn comments a lot when I had yarn braids (that was understandable). Got comments when I sang because we share a raspy tenor-ish voice (also understandable). Even got comments when I had mini-twists (not sure why though). I suppose, whenever I change my hair, I look like her at some stage of her life.

My favorite comment, however, came this weekend at the gas station. As I walk into the gas station, a man in the back exclaims “Well, helloooo Lauryn Hill!” and proceeds to sing “STROKING my pain with her fingerssss.” That definitely made my week.

Whether or not I actually look like Miz Hill, I don’t mind. For what she accomplished at such a young age, the woman is a legend.

It’s crazy to me that kids these days won’t know who she was. I play Lauryn Hill music almost every day in class now. At first, they were requesting I change the song to Nicki Minaj but now I made Hill fans out of them.

P.s. Click on the pic to hear young Lauryn drop some knowledge
