My Outfits of the Day

Welcome to TFA 2012 Induction

I volunteered at Houston’s Teach for America 2012 Induction last week. I had a fabulous time! I met some great individuals who are about to undergo intensive training to be transformed into transformational teachers. Being among such high energy, optimistic people recharged my passion for education.

Here are just a few of the incoming TFA Corps Members.

I’m proud that I will be working along-side these individuals in the fight for educational equity.

Good luck at Institute!

These are some of the outfits that I wore that week:

[Swapped blouse]

[Thrifted pants]

I had my hair in coils all week. At this point, the coils are about a month old. I started experimenting with updos and finally settled on the basket weave technique or the the “lobster tail” that many loc’d individuals sport. All you do is layer strands of hair on top of one another in chunks. I used to do this style with my yarn braids for updos.

People kept telling me they loved my locs, which was very flattering. It seems I have an eye for loc-look-alikes when it comes to hair. Later on in the summer, I may try another loc-look-alike style when I go to New York.

This is what the back of my head looked like:

I know. Ridiculous! Lol.

WAYW #32

Sometimes it’s the little things that make your day. This day, it was my pink sparkly pedicure. With school winding down, I actually had time to pamper myself and do my own nails. Although I usually prefer the french tip look, I opted for something girly to celebrate the summer.

Another thing I loved about my outfit was the patterned shirt…which is actually a dress from Forever 21! I learned from my baby sister, Ney, to wear those too-short dresses as tops to make them work, school, or church appropriate. It’s not a good for me as a teacher and a woman of God to be wear “Oh oh ohh Freakum dresses.”

But anyway, I love when Ney is in town. I feel like my closet doubles in size!

WAYW #31 If I wear a boy…

I’d probably wear an outfit like this:

It was free-dress day at school. I chose to wear an oxford shirt, my brother’s tie (which I woke up my dad to tie for me), a v-neck khaki sweater, and dark wash skinny jeans.

The kids had their jaws on the floor. Some told me I look like a boy. One student said I looked LIVE (“on-point”, “stylish”)!

My style this year has changed quite a bit from when I was in college. When I first went natural, I had a slightly androgynous style. I was obsessed with mens vests and ties. That paired with a teeny wee afro and red lipstick made for some interesting moments!

See what I mean?

Me in 2009

Since then, I’ve become decidedly more feminine-looking, or at least I think. Lol.
