DIY “Diamond” Necklace

For the longest time, I have been trying to find the perfect solitaire diamond necklace. I wanted one with a thin chain and a small round diamond. After combing through Amazon, Ebay, and etsy and not finding anything I liked within my price range, I headed over to Hobby Lobby to make my own.

Taadaaaa!

The chain was on clearance for $1.47 and the gem came in a pack of 6 or 8 for around $4. I say that’s money well spent. The search for the diamond necklace is over!

Product Review: Flexi Tail (Phone stand)

Every once in a while, I find an “As Seen on TV” product that has found its way to the dollar store. When products are $1, instead of 6 payments of $19.99, they’re so much more appealing. At The Dollar Tree today, I found a product called the “Flexi,” a mobile tail stand. It holds your phone upright, I suppose so that your hand doesn’t get cramped while you’re trying to view a movie on your phone or something.

So I gave it a try. It works in 3 easy steps.

#1. Place the suction cup on the back of your phone

(note: the suction cup is a strong little guy!)

#2. Lean phone into a comfortable position

#3. Feed the end of Flexi tail into the audio jack (optional)

And viola! You have a phone stand! I’ve always wanted one of these, I think. Well, now I have one. I think this is an innovative product. I might not have bought it, but I saw the cashier at the Dollar Tree using one and she demonstrated how it works.

Thanks Dollar Tree, for a cool new toy! :)

Good Eats: The Grotto

My friend Soluto had a birthday dinner at The Grotto around the Galleria. He told us to dress to impress, so I paired my classy red dress with some pearls (as seen here).

While we waited for everyone to arrived, we were served an assortment of breads and breadsticks. I’m a big lasagna fan, so I ordered the “Lasagne Al Forne.” I wasn’t too please with the $17 price tag, or the small portion (at least compared to the other dishes that came to the table. I was, however, impressed with the taste! Maybe it was the good company and good conversation, or maybe it was just good lasagna, but I enjoyed my meal. I was surprised to find I was full after the square of lasagna. Perhaps it was all the bread.

At the end of the dinner, before they brought an unsplit check for 25 people (O_o), they brought out a complimentary birthday cheesecake with sparklers. They also sang “Happy Birthday” for him.

Bottom Line: The Grotto has a good ambience (lighting, music, and decor). We had a semi-closed off side room that we shared with one other party. I attach good memories with The Grotto because it was like a mini reunion for my friends and I. The high price plus the small portion size is not ideal for most people. I thought The Grotto’s food was decent (I’ve had better lasagne) but I wanted to give them another chance. I browsed their website and found that they have Happy Hour specials.

Here’s a screenshot of their Happy Hour menu:

I’d recommend The Grotto if you have a full wallet and like a variety of pasta and Italian dishes.

Perks: Free bread, free birthday cake

Drawbacks: price

Welcome to TFA 2012 Induction

I volunteered at Houston’s Teach for America 2012 Induction last week. I had a fabulous time! I met some great individuals who are about to undergo intensive training to be transformed into transformational teachers. Being among such high energy, optimistic people recharged my passion for education.

Here are just a few of the incoming TFA Corps Members.

I’m proud that I will be working along-side these individuals in the fight for educational equity.

Good luck at Institute!

These are some of the outfits that I wore that week:

[Thrifted shorts]

[Thrifted shorts]

[Swapped blouse]

[Thrifted pants]

I had my hair in coils all week. At this point, the coils are about a month old. I started experimenting with updos and finally settled on the basket weave technique or the the “lobster tail” that many loc’d individuals sport. All you do is layer strands of hair on top of one another in chunks. I used to do this style with my yarn braids for updos.

People kept telling me they loved my locs, which was very flattering. It seems I have an eye for loc-look-alikes when it comes to hair. Later on in the summer, I may try another loc-look-alike style when I go to New York.

This is what the back of my head looked like:

I know. Ridiculous! Lol.
