Coiling Around

Hey everyone, I hope you’re having a great labor day!

Just thought I’d show y’all what my hair is looking like these days. They’re still in coils. As you can see, the coils have matured and have been retwisted a few times since I first out them in around mid-May. The crinkly texture in the picture above is from a braid-out.

I’m loving the texture of my hair. I can see my growth easily with this. I can tell I’m getting some length because I’ve had to constantly push my bangs out of my eyes. I like the size of the coils. At this point, they’re still pretty lightweight when dry. They still curl up after a good wash. I wash them every few weeks and retwist right after the wash.

Check out this picture of them after  wash:

The coils are by no means perfect. The right side is a little fuller and longer than the left. And the front coils are smaller than the back ones. But I love all 175 of them just the same. Yes, I counted! About 175 coils total.

Like I said, post-wash the coils do shrink. Honestly, I prefer them a little shrunken.

Here’s the actual stretched out length:

Although, I’m loving my hair these days, I wanted to see if I could still put braids on top of them. I tried putting on yarn braids— mini-fail. I’ll try to look into my options so I don’t over-manipulate my hair.

Cirque du Soleil

Somehow I managed to make it to 23 years of age without ever having set foot in a circus, or zoo for that matter (but that’s a different story). I recently was given some tickets to go to see Cirque du Soleil.

It was a great show. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, in wonder and amazement like a child. I covered my eyes when I thought the tightropper was going to fall. I was hypnotized by the rhythm of the six simultaneous hula hoops circling the gymnast’s body. And I was charmed by the romance of the unicyclist and his flexible companion. It was crazy, funny, and it ruined me for all other circuses. I loved it!

Tobs & I (cue: “Reunited and it feels so goood”). Hooray for mirror pictures!

The gymnasts were so talented. I briefly wondered if they were overqualified for Olympic gymnastics.

Watch this video of 19 year old contortionist/hula hooper Elena Lev perform in Cirque du Soleil Alegria.

This is super beasty, and is what I think of when I hear “rhythmic gymnastics.” No shade meant for the talented Olympiads, but this kind of work must require one heck of a training regime.

Great show. I highly recommend it!

Good [Ethnic] Food: Nigerian & Indian

While in New York, I was impressed with the diversity of the people around me. There are some amazing culturally authentic pockets tucked away. My adventure buddy, Bukky, had the idea to meet up with some of her family and try out a Nigerian restaurant called the Buka Lounge.  I usually only eat Nigerian food at my house and at Nigerian parties, and I have never been to a Nigerian restaurant. I had been to scared to try Houston’s Fingerlicking restaurant (I have no idea why because I’ve heard mostly good things.)

I ordered: Goat meat pepper soup and a side of akara.

I love my mother’s goat meat pepper soup because it’s the right amount of spice; just enough, not too little. I was pleasantly surprised to find this pepper soup was very similar to my mom’s cooking, only a tad spicier. I had to keep my glass of water near by, but the burning around my lips let me know I was eating authentic Nigerian cuisine.

The akara and the sauce (it wasn’t quite stew) were delicious together.

Here are some other meals at the table:

Great dinner, great company.

————-INDIAN FOOD————

On another day, we tried Indian food. I already love Indian food, so I ordered Tiki Masala with Jasmine rice and a side of Naan bread. Delicious!

Hook ’em Horns with the Charging Bull at Wall Street

So as we were walking along the streets in Brooklyn and we bumped into these cool cats. I recognized Suzy (African Creature), Noddy (Super Noddy), and Ira (#IRANATION) from Tumblr. They were super chill and very down to earth. Maybe we’ll bump into them again. It was a great day, thanks to BukkyB and her friend Melvin for being our tour guides. So it turns out Melvin is part of a Nigerian boy band called A’won Boyz. He had been chilling and goofing around with us all day. It wasn’t until the end of the night that we figured out how famous he was.

I’ll end this post with a peek at their hype Azonto music video:

Check out these talented peeps. I admire the hustle. It’s no small task to be a creative. Props to them.

Good Eats: In the Big Apple

My first meal off the airplane was a bbq brisket sandwich in North Carolina. Good stuff. Fried pickles and hush puppoes on the side. Yummm!Detailes about the restaurants to follow.

Top left: The OZ Cross sub

Large enough for two meals! The Deli had many subs that crazy names paying homage to celebrities, bands, or other famous people.

I also tried a couple new things while I was here:

#1.Oreo Donut- Dunkin Donuts

The donut was gooood…for the first 3 bites. After that, I was done. The

#2. Sweet Apple- Arizona

I love Arizona juice! My favorite flavor is Kiwi Strawberry, and Fruit Punch is close second. I saw Sweet Apple and decided to try it out. Big mistake. I had to force myself to swallow the weird pseudo-apple juice. I will stick to my kiwi strawberry. It ain’t ever lied to me.

See, Mommy, I’m nowhere near starving!

Shaking a Tailfeather for Lady Liberty

My staff, coworkers, and scholars had a boat cruise on the last day of our session. We went through Chelsea Piers and got dolled up to see the Statue of Liberty and the skyline of New York City. Earlier this day, we’d already seen the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Beautiful view + beautiful people + great music = great time! There was good food, good company, and the DJ was cranking up some good tunes. At the end, I lost my voice, which is my tell-tale sign that I’ve had a good time.
